A Deacon is an office established in the early church (see Philippians 1:1 and 1 Timothy 3:8,12).
The earliest mention of Deacons (in Greek diakonos, meaning servant) is in Acts 6:1-7 when seven men were ordained by the apostles to take care of the matter of the distribution of food to the needy. While it is clear that these men were appointed to relieve the apostles of these duties to allow them to concentrate on preaching the Word, it is also clear that the Deacons were godly men who prayerfully fulfilled roles as leaders themselves.
